treadingdawn: (let's talk history)

There appears to be no curse today...

So how have you spent your hours? How will you spend the hours remaining?

This may or may not get Caspian into more trouble than he ever wishes to bargain for, but that seems to be a repeated habit in his life, isn't it?

"What do you mean we don't really say anything to you," he asks, honest and curious. He does feel as if Lucy is both a younger sister and older one, a girl with a woman's soul so to speak. He wishes nothing more than to treat her as he has been treated by all of them.

Lucy thinks about it for a moment. It's a subject that is always below the surface with Lucy, because she is only a child but at the same time she is a woman, but people often only look at the shape. That is why she looks forward to the full moon - because people see Lucy as she is.

"Well," she begins, "I think if there's trouble, or if someone is angry or sad, they won't tell me. Maybe because they want to protect me." That's why she values people who can be honest with her. "I think sometimes Peter keeps things from me in the interest of protecting me."

"Sometimes no one wishes to make those around them angry or sad too," he says to her even though this too is fairly easy to understand, except in most cases one always figures it out before the other can unfold it on their own. It's one of the things he likes about the Pevensies and one of the things he feels must come with a family; an ability to read others as well or even better than you can read yourself.

However when she says his name, that changes things in Caspian's mind. Just slightly.

Already he fears his often transparent face will give away his guilt, so Caspian looks to the trees.

"I don't think it is that you need to be protected so often, Lucy. It may be that Peter needs time to feel ready for the truth." He mentions no specifics, nothing about what he has already addressed with his friend who is more than a friend, nothing about old wounds like knowing it was always Lucy who told them not to forge ahead with the night raid, and Lucy the one who had to stay behind anyway.

Lucy sighs. She knows. in a lot of ways, that there is a secret that Peter isn't ready to tell her - she doesn't know because she's certain, and she doesn't know because she's seen him do odd things, because she isn't and she hasn't. She simply knows because she knows her older brother. "I know that sometimes people don't want to hurt others," she says, quietly, "But I also think that sometimes my family, they see me, and they think I am too young, or perhaps they feel that it will hurt me."

This isn't something that she lets bother her overmuch, but sometimes it's disconcerting to think that her family is hiding things from her simply because they think she is not old enough to handle it.

"Peter..." she pauses. She hesitates to be critical of her oldest brother, because she loves him so much, but Lucy is too aware to not notice and Lucy is too honest to lie, even to herself. "Sometimes Peter thinks that the truth is a much harder thing to face. Maybe because he is older, or maybe his truths are harder. I wish he would talk to me, sometimes."

"Lucy," says Caspian. He released her hand only to move in front of her, dropping to one knee because of her shape but let's face it he is Very Tall and she is Not Tall At All. It's just easier for them to lock gazes this way, warm brown eyes to blue ones that seem to glisten like the ripples of the Eastern Sea.

"You know each other better than anyone. If you feel he is being unfair you know he will listen and reconsider, but there are some truths even he is afraid to understand. There are some he needs to understand before he can face them at all. I think he would be braver if you would tell him this and not me." Caspian nods once, everything from gaze to gesture completely honest. "Nothing more could do him any better than the sound of his sister's voice, neither forcing his hand nor dismissed."

She looks him in the eye, and she's not at all bothered or even mildly ruffled by the look in Caspian's eyes. Instead her arms go around his neck, for just a moment, after he says what he does. "I don't want to seem ungrateful, I truly don't," she says, and then she lets go.

She pauses and nods, "He should talk to me. Because I do love him, and I can help him understand." She takes a breath. "But I understand that sometimes he thinks too much, sometimes he can be such a boy."

She looks at Caspian for another long moment. "I'm glad he has you, you know. Because he has never really had many close friends, and I think he needs you, even if he won't say so."

He is relieved to hear her not argue that though it never means she's accepting it either. But in any case something like this is best handled between sister and brother, not sister to brother through a Telmarine, or something.

And if only he were a seal right now, she would have flippers pressed to her sides instead of hands.

"Whether that is true or not," whether he is such a boy or needs Caspian, "I will not do any less than the most I can for you or your brothers and sister, Lucy. It will always be important to me that we should treat one another as only family would." Not the kind of family he came from either. His hand goes to hers once more as he rises to full height. "Let us not keep Salamander waiting."

"Well," she says, thinking. "I love you very much, Caspian, and so I'm glad you would do all you could, because that is important to me too."

One of the reasons that Lucy makes friends so easily is her ability to perk up right away, even when speaking of heavy subjects. People know that if they come to her with a problem or if she goes to them, that they can get a smile out of the youngest Queen of Narnia without much work at all.

"I wouldn't want him to think that we are ignoring him," she says, smiling up at Caspian and his Tallness.
