It's entirely cosmetic. Color is just a matter of preference; some people prefer non-natural shades, and it's frequently an area in which young people experiment, partially with their own notions of beauty and identity, partially as a way of rebelling against societal norms. Some people choose to dye their hair as they get older and go gray, too; as a way of appearing younger.
