It's not the kind of thing he would have counseled, once, but things change - people too, and sometimes for the better, older. Caspian is the one who was gone for years but Peter thinks he feels more of his own in relation. It's strange but for now he doesn't try to understand it.
Weaponry not being a bad idea, Peter goes armed as well, though what good it will be against anything here....he has mild misgivings. ]
