He stares at the toy, knowing it was made to be that way but one doesn't get over the surprise of a plush lion doing this, likely ever. Plus, it's sort of unexpectedly charming.

"If you will have me," Caspian says in a casual manner, offering a smile to the youngest Pevensie too, though clearly she is not the youngest in the household. "Hello," he greets the lion too.

The lion, appeased by the greeting, manages the odd purr that Merlin believed completely possible from a lion. It's not really a guard toy, because it cannot do more than roar, but if it's not appeased it will roar continuously louder; perhaps this is a perverse way that Merlin decided to magick the stuffed animal to annoy the men of the Pevensie household, or maybe it's a guard for Lucy in case someone comes uninvited to her room. Either way, she doesn't know, but it doesn't matter.

She moves over a little to give Caspian the space to enter. They both know why he's there, and she doesn't say anything at first. Instead she sits on her bed, cross-legged.

Finally, she speaks. "I guess you won't be tilting with Edmund."

Honestly is being a boy so bad? He even reaches out to pat the lion on the head as if it were a real pet before entering the room. He shuts the door behind him too, softly and quietly. None of this, he thinks, will escape her notice that he is in fact here to speak about the Just. Of course the Telmarine doesn't underestimate her intuition, but it surprises him all the same. Mildly surprised as ever.

"No, I guess not," he says while taking a seat beside her on the bed. Caspian leans in to nudge his shoulder to hers, which is slightly far down since he is very tall for his age. "How are you, then?" He asks, knowing of everyone in this household it is Lucy and Susan who have had to face the arrivals and departures of their brothers twice over, and Caspian at least once.

Well, no, but it does make one more of a target for pranks and games. Lucy is perfectly aware of how differently she is treated because she is a girl, and that's all right with her. Except when she cannot tilt. No matter what Karolina thinks of it, Lucy thinks it looks like so much fun.

She looks up at the nudge and nods her head. "I'm going to miss him," she begins, softly, and it takes her a moment before she can catch her breath. The Valiant isn't crying, but she is trying very hard not to begin. "He's at home, right? At school. With us." She doesn't know exactly how it works, but that's what people have told her. "Or with Peter, anyway."

Look if that Pinocchio boy were still around and willing to tilt Caspian might be persuaded to persuade Peter on the matter. It's just common sense and safety!

"From my own experience," he starts while lacing his fingers together between his knees, "we do return at the same point from which we arrived." And Caspian knows the Pevensies are familiar with such a phenomenon not once but twice too. It's sort of funny how these things seem to repeat themselves and he has often question why, but never aloud. He has no desire to say a word that might rip him from this long holiday. "It is all right to miss him, you know that. You do not have to be what you think is... strong or grown up," he shakes his head.

She looks up at him sharply, just a little surprised that he realized what she was doing. It wasn't that she thought that Caspian was stupid, or dense, but she knows that sometimes boys don't consider that as something she would attempt. Even Peter; maybe because they assume, as a girl, that she will weep when she wants to.

"I do miss him," she says, sharply, and she pulls her legs up against her chest. "I miss him terribly," she adds, and then she takes a deep breath. "I'm afraid, I'm afraid that you and Peter and Susan and Aslan will go as well and Reepicheep and even Eustace and then I will be alone here, all alone, and no one will be able to comfort me when I'm frightened or take care of me when I need it." She doesn't quite do what she wants, which is to crawl into Caspian's lap and sit there. "But I'm supposed to be brave."

The fear is only there because it has happened before, once; granted she was not all alone, because Susan was there, but there was the fear.

It's safe to say that Peter and probably Edmund would think Caspian isn't like other boys either, but he sees this as neither a strength nor a weakness. That's just how he is, noble contradiction or not. What he doesn't know about caring for siblings he makes up for in his wanting to treat others as how he might be treated. So he reaches out to drape his arm around Lucy's shoulders, not quite tight and not quite loose. Just there because that's what she fears the most isn't it? That one day it and they and everything else may not be there.

"I don't know about Aslan--I don't speak for him either," Caspian is quick to disclaim, "but I think even when you cannot see him or hear him so easily he is there to protect you. You are coming back after all." He mentions this reminder with a slight smile, even if it's tinged with some sadness that has little to do with Edmund's disappearance and everything to do with how he knows the other two will not return, and Caspian himself might be an old man or not there at all when Lucy and Edmund do. Eustace's claims haven't done too much to alleviate that fear much as Scrubb tries out of sheer indignant behavior. "I am afraid too," he admits behind a low sigh, "but fear breeds courage, doesn't it?"

Lucy reacts to the touch by curling up a bit closer to him, but she still doesn't cry. Instead she takes a deep breath. The idea that Caspian proposes - that Aslan is always there, even if she cannot see or sense him is a comforting one. That the Lion who she loves with all of her soul will not abandon her no matter what world they are in, whether she sees him with her eyes or not.

"I guess it does," she says, her tiny hand seeking his. "If there is nothing to be afraid of, then it is no great thing to be brave, is it? Like if there is no evil, then being good is quite natural."

She puts her hand on his, her fingers curling over his hand. "You will try, anyway, to stay, won't you? You won't go seeking a way out, will you?"

"How could we call anything good without knowing what we consider to be evil," he poses but it's a rhetorical question. He knows they feel the same way on the matter, as any king or queen of Narnia would. "Although, not all things we fear are evil," he adds with another smile, recalling how his own people were taught to fear the woods, "sometimes we cannot completely understand the way things are. It doesn't change what is right and what is wrong to feel." Caspian shakes his head.

At this question his brow furrows. Oh he hasn't forgotten the terrible thing he did last year, putting his own life at risk and leaving the girls alone even though that wasn't his intention at all. Caspian should have thought more sensibly.

"Yes, I will try to stay and no I will not go seeking a way out," he promises, fingers turning upward to take her hand in his. "I don't see why I would want to do that, ever," says the Telmarine, tone a little softer, perhaps apologetic.

There were things that Lucy feared with reasons that were not relevant to their cause; thunder, because it reminded her of bombs, heavy winds and storms because it might disguise the sound of airplanes, or worse. She knew what the Telmarine meant, and she gave a long, heavy sigh. "I should be braver," she says, with utmost knowledge that she can be.

She knows, when he says those words, that he means them. She also knows he did not mean to leave in the fall, that he was doing with Susan what they thought had been necessary for the safety of many, not just them. "I believe you," she assures him. "Thank you," she adds.

"You? The girl who went into the forest alone? The girl who took my best horse and made sure Aslan did not scare him too much?"

All right that last part is highly questionable but he assumed Lucy was in fact the last to see Destrier before returning to the river. Finding him safe and sound after the battle had to be at least half her and Aslan's doing. He gives her hand a light squeeze.

"You are brave enough, more than any one of us can ask for," he says honestly. It may sound like what should be spoken, but Caspian is genuine in his meaning. "Thank you too," he smiles.

Lucy does not blush very often, but a mix of embarrassment and pride make her cheeks pink now. "I did what I had to do," she says, the satisfaction with that evident in her voice. "And Destrier is a very brave horse," she adds with a smile, the first she's managed to provide so far.

While Lucy has the same reservation as her siblings, she is a bit younger and quite a bit more open with her feelings than the others. "Caspian," she begins, "I do love you, like Peter and Susan and Ed." The words are offered without any request, without any demands. The youngest Pevensie knew the power of knowing, and that knowing that fact was more than enough.

"You miss Ed too, I know," she says after a moment. "He would like to know that, I think."

This ought to be a given too yet hearing those words does comfort him. He tries not to let it show beyond a mild warming of his smile. "Thank you," he repeats, uttered under his breath but neither shy nor modest.

"I do miss him, but you cannot tell him," Caspian shakes his head, smile turning into a grin, "it would ruin our reputation for silent, terse, camaraderie." That's a joke, just in case his expression doesn't say it enough.

She does not say you're welcome, but she gives the Telmarine king a hug and a smile, and then a laugh. "He would be embarrassed, but I think he misses you too," she says. "But I won't tell him," she promises.

"Were you truly worried about me?"

"You are very benevolent, Lucy," Caspian leans against her again, pressing just for that brief closer contact.

"I was. And to be honest I still am, but not as much. When do we not care for each other's well being?" The answer of course is never. "I will not wring my hands over it though, I promise."

"I am the one who did not allow for harsh punishments in court," Lucy says with a wrinkle of her nose to indicate that she was joking. Edmund never let any of the other Kings and Queens handle anything like that.

"Don't worry too much," she tells him, nudging him back. "My birthday is soon and the tournament will be so much fun, so I think that everything will be all right." Even without Edmund, but Lucy will not mourn his absence that day. Edmund would not have wanted that, at all.
