Issued by High King Peter the Magnificent, delivered by King Caspian the Tenth of That Name:

I, Peter, by the gift of Aslan, by election, by prescription, and by conquest, High King over all Kings in Narnia, Lord of Cair Paravel, and Emperor of the Lone Islands, Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Lion, do hereby challenge the White Witch Jadis to single combat upon the field of battle, invoked by the rite of deep magic as granted from previous deceitful trespasses. The fight shall be to the death at basic arms, forfeiting any and all marshal of the lists. The reward shall be complete surrender of the wand wielded by the White Witch, followed by passing its ownership to Queen Susan the Gentle, King Edmund the Just, Queen Lucy the Valiant, King Caspian X, and myself, High King Peter the Magnificent.

[The parchment is pinned at midnight and remains in the City Square.]

Oh, no. Death is one of those things you want to come at a later time. I can't even count the number of times I've had a botched suicide attempt victim beg me to save them. Death sounds heroic, up until the point you actually start dying.

Have you never encountered a peaceful death? Not that I would expect such a thing from something like this, but it isn't impossible.

The emergency room is a bad place to go looking for peaceful deaths.

Then I hope that whatever such a place is, we will not have to go there.

As long as your duel goes the way you want it to, you shouldn't.

It must. There is no other way it can.

But should we require a doctor with the proper experience and expertise I hope that we may ask for you.

I'd be happy to. I'd be happier if there were no such injuries, but in any case, I wouldn't mind.

Thank you. If you require anything of me you need only ask.
