Issued by High King Peter the Magnificent, delivered by King Caspian the Tenth of That Name:

I, Peter, by the gift of Aslan, by election, by prescription, and by conquest, High King over all Kings in Narnia, Lord of Cair Paravel, and Emperor of the Lone Islands, Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Lion, do hereby challenge the White Witch Jadis to single combat upon the field of battle, invoked by the rite of deep magic as granted from previous deceitful trespasses. The fight shall be to the death at basic arms, forfeiting any and all marshal of the lists. The reward shall be complete surrender of the wand wielded by the White Witch, followed by passing its ownership to Queen Susan the Gentle, King Edmund the Just, Queen Lucy the Valiant, King Caspian X, and myself, High King Peter the Magnificent.

[The parchment is pinned at midnight and remains in the City Square.]

If anything goes wrong, you have my aid. I've made an enemy of her already. It won't hurt.

Merlin is the name of the greatest wizard known to our kind, who is known even to non-magical people, though they largely consider him a myth. He shaped our society as we know it, and communed with all the great powers of our world. Witches and wizards of my world use his name like non-magic people might use 'God'.

And you are from England, aren't you? Merlin is a wizard from England?

From what would eventually become England, yes. This all took place close to six hundred years prior to my time.

It is one known to all our kind, at least. I have books on the subject, if it interests you. From both wizarding and non-magic perspectives.

It does interest me though I wield no magic myself. I have always appreciated the legends that build worlds.

The legends do not only deal with Merlin. His closest protege and the warrior he both trained and served, King Arthur, was a man of no magic himself, though was no less great for it.

King Arthur? Then he was a Son of Adam?

Arthur and Merlin appear nowhere in Judeo-Christian Biblical history.

Well that is to say... King Arthur was a man born from Earth, a human, like the Pevensies and myself.

Ah. King Arthur was human and mortal, yes.

It sounds like a wonderful legend. I shall have to hear the stories, sometime.
